Objectives of Position:
To provide support to students who are academically at risk of wasting their
potential to perform better in school by reinforcing development of
literacy/reading skills.
Responsibilities:
- Provide literacy tutoring and classwork/homework assistance.
- Plan, motivate and engage students in literacy/reading activities.
- Facilitate independent learning and self-expression in literacy/reading.
- Communicate with on-site supervisor/staff about student progress.
- Provide students with strategies that will help them be successful in literacy/reading comprehension, fluency, and retelling.
Qualifications:
- Literacy tutoring experience/coursework preferred.
- Desire to work productively and effectively with children.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Must possess strong listening skills and value diversity.
- Self-starter, ability to work independently and with little supervision.
- High degree of motivation, initiative, and energy.
- Flexibility and leadership skills, but also a willingness to take direction.
Training and Preparation:
Attend orientation session prior to beginning your volunteer work. Must pass background check and complete volunteer application
Length of Commitment:
One academic year commitment preferred; minimum six months
