Volunteer: Virtual Visits with SeniorsConversations to Remember is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated to combating loneliness and isolation felt by older adults, including those living with dementia. Our virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students with older adults for virtual video visits. Many of these older adults have been suffering from isolation, and you can brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide mandatory training to the students in our program about the best ways to interact with the older adults on our video calls, as well as additional regular support throughout their service. Since the visits are virtual, your students can do it without any travel. This is both convenient, and allows more of their time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to their volunteering location. This program is free to older adults and students across the country. Students on our virtual visits initially volunteer one hour per week. Calls last up to one hour, based on the older adult's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for at least 16 weeks, so that they can develop a friendship with the older adult. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new virtual visits starting all the time. Students are matched with older adults for calls based on the times when they're available, and have a regular, weekly appointments for their visit. Students wishing for opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with other volunteering options, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, outreach, or more. Current volunteering roles are listed on our website here. Interested students should register to volunteer on our website, at https://conversationtoremember.org/volunteer. Volunteer: WCAC - Paparazzi VolunteerGLAMOR SHOTS! Having a good photographer is vital for our website and social media reach. Many potential adopters look at our website prior to coming out to the Center and a picture is often the first chance at marketing our animals for adoption. A great photograph can capture the animal’s personality – making them more desirable. A bad photograph can make the animals look sick, angry, or just plain not-so-charming. The Paparazzi Team takes pictures of our animals (ideally outside for dogs and livestock – if possible – and inside for cats and critters) so people are enticed to come out and adopt. In addition, people who have lost their pet often check online for their missing animal and a quality picture could be all the difference! Volunteer: WCAC - Cuddling VolunteerCuddlers interact with the animals that are ineligible to leave their kennel. For example, certain dogs may be ineligible to be walked outside due to age, health, medication, or length of time at the shelter. Socialization is especially important for kittens and puppies, shy adults, and those who need help with basic manners. Cuddling gives the animals the chance to stretch their legs and receive love and attention. This position helps excited dogs learn how to be calm around new people (not every interaction leads to a walk outside) and helps anxious cats trust new people, which can prevent scratching and biting habits from forming. Volunteer: Juvenile Tutor/MentorVolunteer tutors/mentors are needed to work with at-risk youth ages 6-17 who have been referred by Juvenile Court Counselors, schools, community agencies, and parents in Wake County. The students and their tutors generally meet twice a week for 1.5 hours per session. Tutoring sessions are usually conducted between 3pm and 6pm Monday-Thursday, but times may vary. Sessions are held in libraries around the county (this can include libraries on NCSU's campus). We understand that our students and tutors all have a lot to juggle each day, so we do our best to remain flexible in scheduling and to find times that are most effective for all involved. In order to see the best results from our students, we ask for a 6-month commitment from both our students and our volunteers. We understand that this can be difficult to fulfill for college students who may travel home during school breaks. Please contact the program manager if you are interested, and we will do our best to work with your schedule. Prior to beginning tutoring, you will be asked to complete a short online training course to introduce you to our training materials and share the basics of lesson planning for our student population. During your time volunteering with the JLC, you will be asked to create and execute lesson plans with your student. You will be given access to an online database of lesson plans and educational materials that can serve as tools for creating these plans. Each month, you will be asked to submit a detailed report of both the work you are doing and the student’s academic progress. Tutors are asked to keep records of attempted academic interventions and student attendance. Most tutors dedicate a maximum of 5 hours a week to this role.
